How Can You Help Couples Prepare for Marriage?

If you are a mental health professional, life coach, gay advocacy group member, marriage counselor, or clergy, this certification program is for you. If you are looking to expand your counseling practice to reach the gay and lesbian community, this certification will serve you well in that regard. This course also helps to educate any gay or lesbian person who plans to get married and who wants to learn more about the premarital counseling process.

Offering Premarital Counseling is a great way to build your counseling or social work practice. Gay marriage is on the rise, becoming legal in more and more states, and gay couples are forming long-term commitments at a faster rate than ever before. Many gay and lesbian couples who want to get married also want to learn more about each other and plan ahead for their lifelong bond. Premarital counseling, tailored to meet their specific needs, is a great way to help them do that. If you take this certification course, you will be prepared to offer premarital counseling to members of the gay and lesbian community in a professional, knowledgeable, organized way.

Once you’re certified to offer premarital counseling for gays and lesbians, you will have a stronger foundation upon which to build your ever-growing couples counseling knowledge-base. This course starts by offering the basics of relationship-strengthening skills, a guidebook offering narrative examples of the concepts taught in class, several forms to elicit discussion, and a test which checks for comprehension of the subject itself.

The certification program includes everything you need to start offering premarital counseling to gay couples, including:

  • Specific guidelines on couples counseling timing, structure, and scheduling.
  • Dozens of questions designed to elicit conversation and insight, from intake to completion of the counseling sessions.
  • 17 Forms for the counselor to use as prompts during session. The counselor should assign these forms as homework for each partner to complete outside of session.
  • A specific form which serves as documentation of the fact that the couple did indeed complete a couples premarital counseling program prior to the wedding. Many priests, pastors, and ministers require such documentation before they are willing to perform the ceremony.
  • Links to LGBT articles to help you gain insight into the gay community.
  • 2.5 Continuing Education Clock Hours
  • CE Hours for Mental Health Professionals: NBCC, TX LPC, TX Social Workers, TX Marriage and Family Therapist. See the FAQ page for full list.
  • Mental Health Classes, LLC is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP TM) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.
  • Most Psychology, Marriage and Family, and Social Work State Boards recognize NBCC Certified Providers. We recommend that you contact your local State Board to confirm.

Cost: $37.50 for Presentation, Test, and Certification.*

  • You will want to download and print the full set of downloadable forms and practice filling them out. By filling them out yourself, you will be able to do a better job of facilitating discussion about the forms with your clients.
  • In order to offer context for the gay/lesbian experience, this course requires that you read some personal stories written by gays and lesbians about what it was like to come out as an LGBT individual and to fall in love with a same-sex partner.
